They said the house at the end of the lane was hungry. Four kids laughed at the warning and climbed through its broken window anyway. Inside, the dust never settled, and the doors closed by themselves. A child's laughter echoed from the empty attic, though none of them had gone up. When the walls began to breathe, they finally understood the whispers were right. They ran, clawing at a door that didn't want to open, and spilled out into the cold night, hearts pounding, promising never to doubt a warning again.
